How long is a snooker frame and match?
There is no clock in snooker, except at the Shoot Out, so a frame lasts as long as it takes. A quick frame can be under 10 minutes and a long tactical one can pass an hour. What you can plan around is the number of frames.
What makes a frame long or short
- Open or closed. Once the reds are spread, one player can clear in a single visit. Frames where the reds stay packed become long safety battles.
- Snookers. A player who needs snookers may play on for several more minutes.
- The miss rule. Repeated misses, with the balls put back each time, can add a lot of time.
The World Championship
The longest matches in snooker. Every round runs over at least two sessions:
| Round | Frames | Sessions |
|---|---|---|
| First round | Best of 19 | 2 |
| Second round | Best of 25 | 3 |
| Quarter-finals | Best of 25 | 3 |
| Semi-finals | Best of 33 | 4 |
| Final | Best of 35 | 4, over two days |
Other events
Most ranking events play short matches in the early rounds, often best of 7 or 9, getting longer towards the final. Each event page on this site shows the format of every round once the draw is out, for example this season's events.
The exception: the Shoot Out
Every match at the Shoot Out is a single frame with a time limit, and every shot is against a shot clock. It is the one event where you know how long a frame will last.
