Wimbledon explained

The oldest tennis tournament in the world and the only Grand Slam on grass, played over two weeks from late June at the All England Club in south-west London. It is free to watch on the BBC.

What makes it different

Grass: fast and low-bouncing. See surfaces.
All white: players must wear almost entirely white. Since 2023 women may wear dark undershorts.
Roofs: Centre Court and No. 1 Court both have retractable roofs, so play there can carry on in the rain.
Electronic line calling: since 2025 the lines have been called electronically instead of by line judges.
Traditions: strawberries and cream, and the Royal Box on Centre Court.

Getting tickets

The public ballot: apply the year before for the chance to buy tickets for a given day and court.
The Queue: a limited number of tickets for the show courts, and many more for the grounds, are sold on the day to people who queue. It is part of the Wimbledon experience.
Always buy from the official channels; resold Wimbledon tickets are often not valid.
