Tennis rules explained

Hit the ball over the net into your opponent's court before it bounces twice on your side. Serve diagonally, two chances. The line is in.

The serve

Stand behind the baseline, on the right of the centre mark for the first point of each game, then alternate.
Serve diagonally into the opposite service box. The ball must bounce in the box before the receiver hits it.
Two chances. Miss the first and you have a second serve; miss both and it is a double fault.
Let: if the serve clips the net and lands in the right box, take it again.
Foot fault: touching the baseline or the court with either foot before hitting the ball is a fault.

During a rally

The ball can bounce once at most on your side. Volleying it before it bounces is fine, except on the return of serve.
A ball on any part of the line is in.
You lose the point if you touch the net, if the ball hits you, or if you hit it before it crosses to your side.
The ball may hit the net during a rally and still be good if it lands in.

Singles and doubles lines

Singles uses the inner side lines. Doubles adds the tramlines, the alleys down each side. The serve always goes into the same service boxes in both. See court size.

Line calls

At the top level, line calls are now made electronically: the ATP Tour uses electronic line calling at all its events, and Wimbledon replaced its line judges with it in 2025. At club level, each player calls the lines on their own side, and gives the benefit of the doubt to their opponent.
