Padel rules explained

Padel is doubles on a small court with glass walls. The scoring is the same as tennis, the serve is underarm, and the ball can be played off the walls after it bounces.

The serve

Stand behind the service line, between the centre line and the side wall.
Bounce the ball on the floor behind the service line.
Hit it at or below waist height, with at least one foot on the ground.
It must go over the net diagonally and bounce in the opponents' service box.

You get two attempts, as in tennis. The serve is a fault if it lands outside the box, or bounces in and then hits the metal fence before bouncing again. If it bounces in and then hits the glass, it is good. A serve that clips the net and lands in the box is a let and is played again, unless it then hits the fence.

The walls

Every shot must cross the net and bounce in the opponents' court first. Hitting their glass or fence directly loses the point.
After that bounce, the ball can hit any wall on their side and they can still play it, as long as it has not bounced twice.
You can play the ball off your own walls to get it back over, for example hitting it into your back glass so it rebounds over the net.
If the ball hits the metal fence on your side, it can still be played, but it bounces unpredictably.

Winning and losing points

You lose the point if the ball bounces twice on your side, if you hit it into the net or out, if it hits your opponents' walls or fence before bouncing, or if it hits you or your partner. Touching the net with your body or racket also loses the point.

On courts with openings in the side walls, players are allowed to run out of the court to play a ball that has bounced out through the gap.

Scoring

The same as tennis: 15, 30, 40, game, sets to six games, and a tie-break at 6–6. Professional padel now uses the star point to settle long deuces; see padel scoring.
